Christmas Cake

Having grown up in a very cosmopolitan city, we celebrated every festival with gusto. I had the privilege of getting to know various cultures from close quarters, Christmas being one of them. This was compounded by the fact that I went to a convent school and Christmas was definitely a highlight of our lives.

I had christian neighbours who were more like family. Christmas was a time when we all got together to decorate and make all the goodies. It seemed endless but we had so much fun. I guess I enjoyed it so much that I carried on with the same tradition when I had my own family. Over the years, friends have started looking forward to the cakes and the cookies during Christmas and I do it more in the spirit of it all than for personal consumption. It's just so festive to put up all the decorations, the house full of the baking aroma, the smell of cinnamon, nutmeg and all the other spices wafting through the house and the fruits soaked in bottles of rum, yes old monk to be precise. The excitement at that time of the year is palpable. At the end of it I always end up feeling maybe I should've baked a few more cakes, tried out some new types of cookies, it never seems enough because you can never have too much of a good thing! I must add that in all of this my son has a huge contribution, putting up the tree, cutting all the cookies and mixing the fruits.not to forget licking the bowl clean once I'm done with the baking!
